안경도감 발간에 부쳐
안경은 사용목적에 따라 비정시력(非正視力)을 교정하는 안경과 외부로부터 장애요인이 되는 자외선, 적외선, 가시광선을 차단하여 보호하려는 목적으로 사용되는 보호안경 등으로 구분할 수 있다. 교정용 안경이나 보호 안경 모두 다 중요한 기능을 담당할 뿐만 아니라 인간에게 없어서는 안 될 꼭 필요한 도구이자 필수품이다.
몸이 천 량이면 눈은 구백 량이라는 말이 있듯이 눈의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나친 말이 아니리라 생각한다. 이렇듯이 중요한 신체의 일부분을 담당하고 눈의 순기능적 역할을 하게 되는 안경은 우리 모두의 관심사가 될 수밖에 없다. 그러함에도 안경이 누군가의 노력으로 고안되고 발달되었는지는 명확하게 밝혀진 바가 없는 것은 참으로 역설적이라 아니할 수 없다.
옛 선인들의 발자취와 숨결을 느끼고 우리의 옛것을 이해하는 온고지신(溫故知新)의 자세는 필자로 하여금 20년 이상 안경 수집에 열정을 쏟게 하였다. 옛 안경과 안경집은 우리 선조들의 체취가 흠뻑 풍기는 토속적인 민속품으로서 그들의 얼과 생활상이 묻어나는 분신과도 같은 존재이다. 그러기에 수십 년 동안 갖은 어려움을 극복하며 안경에 관련된 작품들을 수집하였다.
아직도 부족하다고 생각되는 부분이 많으나 만인미답의 분야이기에 안경광학을 배우는 후학들과 관련 업계 및 학계에도 다소나마 도움이 되기를 바라는 마음으로 서둘러 이 책을 발간하게 되었다. 고미술품 등 다른 분야에 비해 관련된 문헌이나 사료 등이 극히 드물어 수집한 작품마다 재질, 특성, 용도, 성상, 문양 등을 미학적 용어와 기준에 맞도록 정리하는데 인적, 물적 측면 모두 애로사항이 많았다. 학구적이고 이론적인 토대를 마련하기에는 보다 많은 노력과 정진이 있어야 하겠으나 남은 과제는 후학들에 넘긴다.
아무쪼록 이 한 권의 책이 발간됨으로써 동서양의 안경 관련 분야의 문화사 정립과 위상확립에 다소라도 도움이 되기를 바랄 뿐이다.

Attachment on the ‘Illustrated Guide to Glasses’ Publication
Depending on the purpose of glasses, they vary from correcting poor eyesight to protecting the eyes from harmful external elements as UV, infrared, and visible rays. Both form of glasses, prescription and protective, are not only functional of important responsibilities, but are necessaries that humans can no longer do without.
As they say, if the body is a thousand dollars, the eyes are nine-hundred dollars – the importance of eyes cannot be emphasized enough. Accordingly, glasses, the device responsible for the important body part and that which help our eyes apply their full potential, can only be all our great interest. Nevertheless, the fact that it has never been clearly verified whose effort and design created the basis on which glasses were developed is an odd paradox.
Understanding the attitude of taking lessons learnt by the virtuous men of the past and sensing their footprints and breaths has led the author to devote more than twenty years in the collection of glasses. Old glasses and cases are traditional folk items that exude our ancestors’ effort and sweat, and are as they themselves, being vestiges of their spirit and life principles. Because of these significant elements, the author has been able to overcome the twenty years of barriers to achieve a diverse collection of pieces relating to glasses.
There still are insufficient areas to the compilation, but as this is a topic that is yet to be specified, questioned and covered, this book has been published for the prospective that it will help future optical scientists and scholars of related fields. In comparison to artistic pieces and historical items of other fields, literature and informational sources of this field are exceptionally rare, which caused constant difficulty in analyzing the material, features, use, iconic elements, and design of each collected item in terms of aesthetics of both human and physical aspects. The continued task of further explorations is passed to future students, as this is an area not of scholarly or theoretical foundations, but mostly of effort and devotion.
In any case, it is my wish that the publication of this book proves some support of the establishment of the status of the cultural history of eastern and western areas of related fields.
